GENERIC RIVER AND PLACE NAMES MAPS
7 September 2011
Here are two striking and excellent maps of Britain: Naming rivers and places.
They are a welcome visual realisation of British variety. The place name map especially shows the variety of influences. Look how settlements in England carry Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Viking names. There are some helpful comments.
Perhaps here I can recommend the excellent Landscape of place-names by Margaret Gelling and Ann Cole (Shaun Tyas, 2000) and of course Oliver Padel’s Cornish Place-Name Elements (1985, English Place Name Society).
